Leverkusen Reach Europa League Semis, West Ham and Liverpool Bow Out
Late Goals Give Leverkusen Advantage in Second Leg
Newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen secured a place in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday, while both Liverpool and West Ham crashed out of the competition.
Leverkusen defeated West Ham 3-1 at the London Stadium, with two late goals from Jeremie Frimpong and Amine Adli giving the German side a significant advantage heading into the second leg next week.
West Ham started the match brightly and took a deserved lead through Jarrod Bowen in the 21st minute. However, Leverkusen equalized just before half-time through Robert Andrich, and Frimpong's goal in the 88th minute swung the tie in Leverkusen's favor.
Adli then sealed the victory with a goal in injury time, leaving West Ham with a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Liverpool Defeat Leaves Champions League Hopes in Balance
Liverpool's hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals are hanging in the balance after they were defeated 3-0 by Real Madrid at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium in Madrid.
Vinicius Junior, Marco Asensio, and Karim Benzema scored the goals for Real Madrid, who dominated the match from start to finish.
Liverpool will now need to win the second leg at Anfield by at least three goals in order to progress to the last four.
